JISCMail - SPACESYNTAX Archives

Dear Mike,

when mapping several storeys it may be important how you create the links. There was a good discussion on this list not so long ago but I can suggest either Brömsale & Hölscher (2007) "Multilevel complexity in terms of space syntax" (from sss6 in Istanbul) or my own Koch (2009) "Architectural Fashion Magazines" (from sss7 in Stockholm), they both show quite clearly how you can map vertical connections. The end result mapping of stairs would turn out more or less similar even if the argument/method of reaching it is somewhat different.

In some cases, of course, singular links works fine, and they can be used as a first test. However, the formal properties of vertical links do affect behavior, so the more precisely you map the different stairs the better your model is likely to correspond to use patterns (or perhaps spatial cognition in whichever form it takes). A straight set of stairs you have good overview of simply works very different than a meandering set of stairs in its own space.

On a very pragmatic note: to further specify what Alan says, for VGA you make links after you "Make Visibility Graph", but before you "Run Visibility Graph Analysis". The link function is called "Join" and is represented by two dots with an arrow in-between in the interface. It does work to do it after you have run the analysis (if you have done it without saving your basic Visibility Graph - which I propose you always do), it will simply create a new layer with the links included.

Another tip: Save after you have made the links but before you run the analysis. It is rather easy to forget a link somewhere. It can spare you hours and gigabytes as you can reload a fresh model each time.

/Daniel

Yes you can do this in depth map. Produce a single drawing with all the plans laid out on it, fill each floor plan separately, run VGA, and then use the 'link' tool to make links for all the stairs. Alternatively you can map the plans axially and then create links for the stairways.

Hi everyone,

I am trying to measure depth, asymmetry, etc. of a multi-level structure (ship). Is there a way of doing this in Depthmap or do I need to analyse each deck separately?
